After being seated one Saturday for drunk brunch, my attention was drawn to the many TV screens inside Level playing “Hello” from The Book of Mormon (a recording from a stage performance), followed by “Transylvania Mania” from Young Frankenstein (recorded from a Macy’s Thanksgiving Parade past) and the “Elephant Love Medley” from the 2001 movie Moulin Rouge. That’s when I fell in love with brunch at Level before even looking at a menu, because I realized that Level’s brunch is “Broadway brunch.”
Level’s spacious, swanky, dining room outfitted with white leather chairs, wispy white drapes and a full wall of windows showing off High Street creates the upscale ambiance you’d expect in the Short North. Throughout brunch, musical numbers from movies, recorded stage productions, and live television performances kept me happily tapping my toes and resisting the urge to sing along. I thought it best not to ask if these clips were licensed for commercial use.
I ordered the Wildflower cocktail, made with sweet tea vodka, St. Germain Elderflower Liqueur and Sprite, which was light and refreshing. My husband had a tasty classic Sidecar (cognac, orange liqueu, lemon juice). Several fruity martinis are featured on Level’s drink list, any of which would likely make a satisfactory selection for daydrinking.
From the brunch menu I ordered the Potato and Blue Cheese Frittata, with rosemary seasoned eggs and potatoes topped with bleu cheese and balsamic glazed onions. I always forget that I don’t really like frittatas until after I order them (I find them too dry) but this was pretty delicious. My husband had a massive and flavorful Chorizo Burrito, with Chorizo sausage, potatoes, onions, peppers, avocado, cheddar cheese and scrambled eggs, served with sour cream and mango salsa.
The food and drinks were good, and several tempting menu items untried might have brought me back, but the showtunes ensure that ‘ll be back. Soon.
Broadway brunch at Level is served Saturdays and Sundays from 11am-3pm. Level is located at 700 N. High Street.
