Growlers in Columbus 2013

Written by on July 10, 2013 in Beer - 29 Comments

It’s time again for our annual directory of growler fill destinations in Columbus, which are steadily on the rise – we’ve added over three dozen new fill spots since last year’s list.

Let’s go back over Growlers 101 for the uninitiated: a growler is typically a half-gallon glass jug, though “howlers,” or half-growlers, are on the rise, too. Growlers are eco-friendly since no waste is created, and you’re almost always getting fresher beer than you would in a bottle or can. Beer will stay fresh in a sealed growler for 7-10 days, and possibly longer with proper refrigeration and some electric tape around the cap – though we advise drinking the hoppier brews sooner than later. After opening a growler, you should plan to empty it in one evening, though I’ve enjoyed some growlers up to two days after opening.

Below are the breweries, bars and retail shops in Central Ohio where you can fill a growler. Some places will fill growlers, but don’t actually sell the glass jugs, so BYOG. Other places will not fill a growler that was purchased elsewhere (some claim it’s illegal – it’s not. We’ve checked. Twice.) We’ve tried to mark those spots below.

I almost mentioned the Shell station too but wasn’t sure how many taps they had. Is it just one or do they have multiple? Saw they had Jackie O’s a couple months ago!

MyBar 161 fills growlers and sells the jugs. They have about 6 cheap domestics on tap, and 4-5 local/craft/seasonal/specialty taps. The manager, Nick, is a real beer aficionado and usually open to suggestions, too.

I had my stomach legally changed to a growler so that I can cheaply drink directly from the tap at most of these locations.

Additional info on whether or not these places will fill your own growler (even for an additional charge) or if you have to buy their growler would be AWESOME
