Westies Gastropub just opened for business in January, but in the few weeks they’ve been around they have tested, refined and rolled out a brunch menu, adding Westies to the delicious ranks of restaurants that can get us all full and tipsy before noon on the weekends.
The dining room of Westies is outlined with almost two dozen flat-screen televisions, making it a great brunch spot for the sportsball inclined. Despite that, it’s not a “sports bar” – it’s a modern, inviting space perfect for brunching.
Westies brunch drink list includes a traditional mimosa, but they also have a Golden Mimosa, which in addition to OJ and sparkling wine includes some of Victory’s Golden Monkey tripel, making it less sweet, more bitter, and pretty interesting. Westies also has a champagne cocktail that uses cherry bitters and OYO Stone Fruit vodka, as well as the “Grapefruit Bubble Bath” with pink grapefruit wine, elderflower liqueur, sparkling wine, ruby red syrup and lemon juice. Skip the sweet stuff and order a Bloody Mary of the pepper-infused, spicy pepper-infused, or bourbon bacon varieties. Bourbon. Bacon.
The brunch food options are limited but varied, including steak and eggs, bread pudding french toast and pancakes with chocolate chips or blueberries. They also have a selection of four filling frittatas, and I opted for one with portobello mushrooms, onions, asparagus, rosemary, oregano, thyme and goat cheese, served with a side of toast. Every creamy goat-cheese topped bite was delicious. The bacon, red pepper, onion, potatoe, spinach, white cheddar and romesco sauce frittata is on my to-try list for next time. Oh, I also had a side of bacon, because bacon.
Brunch at Westies Gastropub is served Saturdays and Sundays from 11am-4pm. Westies Gastropub is located at 940 South Front Street.
