Pool Pints: Where to sip and swim this summer

We only get a few months of warm weather in Ohio so, damnit, we have to make the best of it. If you’re like me and prefer spending your sunny days splashing around — with an adult beverage, of course — here are a few places to check out this summer.

Hoof Hearted Brewery and Kitchen

850 North 4th Street

With no admission fee plus three Hoof beers and a limited food menu offered from a small outdoor bar, Hoof Hearted’s pool is hopping. I’ve been twice so far and it seems I am the only person interested in actually being IN the pool, which is fine by me, however the pool doesn’t seem to be heated so when the sun ducks behind the Italian Village brewery around 5pm it gets a little chilly.

Hoof Hearted’s pool is open to the public from 3pm-9pm Wednesday-Friday, and from 11am-8pm Saturday-Sunday. The brewery will host their next big pool party on July 22 featuring resident artist and Columbus native Thom Lessner as DJ, plus a new collaboration with Louisville brewery Against the Grain called “Hat Prisoner,” a double dry hopped pale ale with lactose added.

Flannagan’s Elly Bay

6835 Caine Rd

The 2,000 square foot heated pool has gone private this year. A $150 season pass (and promise of adhering to a code of conduct) will allow you to bring up to three guests per visit all summer long. A swim-up bar makes this the most convenient place to get your drink on.

Flannagan’s pool opens daily at noon and closes at 6pm Monday-Friday and 7pm Saturday-Sunday. You can apply for a season pass here.

Zoombezi Bay

4850 Powell Road

The waterpark at the zoo is not just for kids. An adults-only lazy river provides the perfect setting for floating and imbibing. While only a few mixed drinks and beers are available at the bar adjacent to the river, another bar over by the wave pool offers additional mixed drinks and an expanded craft beer selection.

Zoombezi Bay opens at 10:30am and is open daily through August 18 and weekends through Labor Day. Closing hours vary. Adult tickets are $28.99 online, less for Zoo members or if you buy them up at a local Kroger.
