Pub Mahone brings Irish flare to downtown Columbus

Kiss my ass, Pub Mahone.

The name of new Irish bar and restaurant Pub Mahone is a take on the Irish phrase “Pog Mo Thoin” which has a very similar pronunciation and translates in English as “kiss my ass.” No such attitude exists in the new pub, however, which was opened by Florida-based Irishman Eamon Murray last month on the corner of Gay and Pearl Streets in downtown Columbus.

Just a few blocks from the Statehouse and surrounded by downtown offices and hotels the pub will surely have potential patrons close by at any hour of the day and night. The space, once occupied by J. Gumbos, has since undergone extensive renovation. The new pub has a downstairs dining room and bar that seats eighty, an upstairs event loft that seats another thirty, and a patio that seats forty-six. The bar is designed with a pair of garage-style doors that open during warm weather so that patrons can sit both outside and in and easily interact with each other across the narrow bar. In the back of the pub there is a space for darts and potentially other games and entertainment down the road. There is also a small area set aside near the front windows for local Irish bands to set up and play during events.

Pub Mahone boasts an impressive twenty-six beers on draft which range from must-have Irish offerings like Smithwicks, Guiness, Harp, Magners and Kilkenny to Ohio crafts from the likes of Four String, Rhinegeist, Great Lakes and Seventh Son, served alongside domestic standards which typically price at $4 while imports and crafts are priced at $6. The pub has an extensive selection of whiskeys focused primarily on Irish along with other spirits and some wines. Happy hour specials run from 4-7pm and include one dollar off drafts and $3 well drinks.

The kitchen menu created by executive chef Mike Bradwell includes everything you’d expect on an Irish pub menu: fish and chips, beef stew, corned beef and cabbage, bangers and mash, cottage pie, etc. Sandwiches include burgers, fish, chicken and a salmon BLT. Appetizers feature pork wings, Rueben fritters, fried pickles, and onion rings. There are a few salads and a vegetarian pasta entrée, but the menu is very comfort food and meat-centric overall.

Pub Mahone is open daily from 11am-2am. Pub Mahone is located at 33 East Gay Street.
