I’ve never really been into brunch buffets. Don’t get me wrong, I am a glutton and given the chance will easily shovel 3-5 plates of bacon in my face, but I’d usually choose one well-planned brunch entree over the all-you-can-eat option. However, if you like variety, or you’re just really, really hungry, I can see the appeal of a buffet of breakfasty goodness – so with that in mind I went to check out La Scala Italian Bistro’s brand-new Sunday brunch buffet.
After a round of mimosas (served on the see-through side, the way they should be thank you very much), I asked if there was a brunch cocktail list, which there isn’t, at least not yet – bear in mind that this was the very first day of brunch at La Scala, so it could be coming.
When I asked, the waitress said the bar could whip up any drink I wanted, though, so I ordered a French 75, one of my favorite brunch cocktails… but got back a strong champagne-whiskey mixture that was definitely not a French 75 (a gin cocktail), but hey, they charged the same price for it as a mimosa, which was definitely a deal. That said, during brunch they also offer their all-day cocktail menu, which should keep you quenched if you’re not in the mood for a bloody mary or mimosa.
The buffet featured a solid selection of items, my favorite being Belgian waffles with sweet cream and strawberries to top, a pile of perfectly crispy bacon (see: intro) and some super cheesy cheddar potatoes. There were also scrambled eggs, sausage & peppers, lasagna, meatballs and a selection of three decadent desserts. And no, I didn’t eat 3-5 plates of bacon… but almost.
Brunch at La Scala Italian Bistro ($16 per person) is served Sundays from 11am-2pm. La Scala is located at 4199 West Dublin-Granville Road,.
