In my mind Powell is a world away from downtown Columbus, but really, it’s like 20 minutes. If you make the journey, you’ll be rewarded with strollable streets, local shopping and Sunday brunch at Kraft House No. 5
When we arrived around noon on a Sunday, the inside was packed – rather than waiting we opted to take a table outside, where we sat for… 18.5 minutes (yes, I counted) before someone even came out to offer us water. I get it, they were busy, but I was pretty annoyed (and hangry) for the first half hour we were here. Eventually when our server came back outside to check on us after dropping off our cocktails, he realized we were freezing and offered to relocate us to a table inside the by-then emptied restaurant, and from there on things got good.
Five house cocktails are offered up for brunch, including a bloody mary, sangria, a clamato and beer concoction called Good Morning Tijuana, a pisco-tomato-citrus blend called the Green Thumb, and the drink I ordered, the Orange Crush, with bourbon, OJ, vanilla and egg white. The frothy egg, vanilla and orange juiced worked wonderfully to balance the bourbon.
Kraft House has ten brunch entrees available, including pancakes, a frittata and enough waffle varieties to offer a flight of waffles – like a beer flight, but WITH WAFFLES. A waffle flight includes three selections: bacon + banana + rosemary maple syrup; dried cherries + bourbon cherry maple syrup; and blueberries + spiced vodka maple syrup. Order something savory and end brunch with a waffle flight. Because waffle flight.
I opted for the breakfast burger, cooked a perfect medium rare and topped with bacon, eggs, a crispy potato wafer and drizzled with maple aioli. The bacon was a little more on the chewy side than I would have liked, but even still this was probably the best breakfast burger I’ve ever had, served with some excellently crunchy and seasoned house-made chips. My boy ordered Chuck’s Breakfast Biscuit: sausage, egg and gouda on a buttermilk biscuit. I don’t care for breakfast sausage but I would have happily eaten this sammich.
Brunch at Kraft House No. 5 is served Sundays from 10am-2:30pm. Kraft House No. 5 is located at 5 S. Liberty Street in Powell.
