In the world of craft beer, there are often several factors when it comes to deciding what beer to drink. One of the most common determining elements is the time of year. Specifically, potent and robust brews go great during the Winter months, while lighter and brighter beers are perfect for the Summer. And, while this way of beer life is sound, it is definitely not absolute. Which is why I found myself craving an IPA to add some brightness to the wintery chill that has settled over Central Ohio. And, like a massive, 32 ounce beacon of silver and majestic radiance, Buckeye Lake’s Legend Valley IPA sang its siren song and drew me into its loving embrace. Be not afraid, it is definitely kosher to set aside the stouts and porters in order to indulge in an IPA as tasty as this.
On the nose, this brew begins with crackers and a big bloom of pine. Hints of bread crust bulk up the gentle malts, while notes of citrus rind and forest floor vegetation add freshness and a touch of funk. At the back of each breath, a mild breeze of mangos and passion fruit bring about a slight sweetness, as well as a potent hop character, without overloading the nose. Each breath ends with a low-key balance of malts and citrus hops that fades somewhat quickly, forcing you to breathe deeper the next time.
Across the palate, Legend Valley arrives with a decent citrus tang, led by mango and passion fruit once more. A pleasant bite of pine and juniper adds a tongue-hugging bitterness, as well as a sizable wave of freshness. Cracker malts slide in beneath the fruit and pine, emanating a hint of bread crust and toast, while a subtle bready sweetness creeps up the sides of the mouth. Mild lemon peel and grapefruit contribute some citrus brightness and lend even more strength to the hops. Each taste is wonderfully mouth filling and slightly juicy, delivering a textbook IPA flavor with each drop.
Buckeye Lake’s Legend Valley IPA hits all of the major marks. Slightly malty, with a delicious mixture of pine and citrus, and enough bitterness to keep you drinking without overpowering the tongue. Honestly, the tastiness of this brew should come as no surprise – Buckeye Lake makes damn good beer. Legend Valley is a perfect break from the potency of the Winter styles, and now that it is available in massive quart cans, you and a friend can share a brew and fight away those falling temperatures. Or, you can grab two, drink both by yourself – double fist style – and have an awesome evening. Either way, this beer is good times in a can.
