SpinDöktor: NOT Not Your Father’s Root Beer

spindoktorIf you haven’t heard of cult phenonemon Not Your Father’s Root Beer, your friends don’t like you.

Since launching in Ohio, Not Your Father’s Root Beer, brewed by Small Town Brewer in Chicago, has commanded a spot in my refrigerator — when I can get my hands on it, that is. I’ve never been a huge root beer fan, so alcoholic root beer as a category didn’t appeal to me much, but DAMN that stuff is good.

I was pretty pumped to learn that an Ohio-owned company called D-Spin Beverages is cranking out their own alcoholic root beer: SpinDöktor.

According to the can, the product is actually crafted in Monroe, Wisconsin, though its ownership is based in Northeast Ohio and the brand markets Cleveland as its homebase.

At 8% ABV, SpinDöktor is stronger than the NYFRB we get in Ohio now (we got the 10% ABV stuff for a while – now we only get the 5.9% ABV bottles.) It shows: there’s definitely a strong alcohol taste in SpinDöktor that NYFRB miraculously avoids. SpinDöktor is also quite a bit sweeter, and the aftertaste hides a hint of artificial aftertaste that I can only describe by saying gives me Four Loko flashbacks.

Overall, though, it’s pretty good — like I said, I’m not a huge root beer fan, and I’m definitely not big on sweet drinks. If I was into either, I can see picking this one up on occasion. As it stands, I’ll stick with NYFRB for my alcoholic soda-related needs.

SpinDöktor is currently available in Columbus in 16-ounce cans, with kegs are coming soon.
