When news broke last week that Scotland’s BrewDog was planning to build a brewery in Columbus, people were excited — perhaps none more than the folks at Smokehouse Brewing, who had secretly been working on a Scottish-inspired ale in anticipation of the announcement (it’s been rumored since April).
“BrewDog was created by two brothers who saw the possibility for the American craft beer experience in Great Britain, which is ironic since our movement was in large part inspired by the British tradition,” said Lenny Kolada, owner of Smokehouse Brewing. “We started plotting to create a beer inspired by the British tradition, but married with the American craft culture.”
The beer, dubbed “Scotty Doesn’t Know,” is an American Amber Ale, an interpretation of a Scottish ale brewed with both American and British malts and hops.
“Scotty Doesn’t Know… the half of it! Just wait until you settle into our fair city, BrewDog” reads the Facebook event for the beer tapping, which will take place at 4pm on Tuesday, June 16. The brewpub will also be featuring a Scotch Egg to pair with the beer.
“The beer is a brewer’s liquid handshake to our Scottish brothers who will be joining us to make Columbus craft a truly international experience,” said Kolada.
Scotty Doesn’t Know will also be available at Grain + grape on Thursday, June 18th for a Smokehouse tap takeover, along with the brewery’s Knockdown Brown and Left Coast Indie Pale Ale.
For those of you who aren’t under the age of 30, Scotty Doesn’t Know is a song from the 2004 film Eurotrip – and one that used to especially annoy my high school boyfriend, Scott.
