Mike’s Likes: Fourth of July beers

Written by on June 29, 2015 in Beer - No comments

That time is upon us where we go out to blow some stuff up or watch others blow some stuff up, eat grilled meats, and sit around with a beer in-hand talking about why we like being in America. Or maybe you take that reflective time to complain about the road construction in Columbus and how the 70/71 interchange will never be done, ever. For real. Either way, you’ll need a beer in that hand of yours, and since it’s for America, make it an American beer that’s not made from a horse, or pulled by a horse, or equipped with some sort of magical color changing mountain.

Left Hand Homefront

First on my list is a fun beer for a great cause from Left Hand brewery out of Colorado. Left Hand made a beer called Homefront which is an IPA. The great cause, named Hops for Heroes, is that all proceeds from the sale of this beer go to military-based charities. The fun part of the beer is that it’s aged on Louisville Slugger bats. Those bats are made from white ash, a wood that virtually no one uses to age beer on so it will be different.

Homestead 1805

Second beer is another IPA from Homestead Brewery in Heath, Ohio. They made a beer called 1805 which is an American IPA. 1805 is a nice mild hop IPA that won’t leave you crushed by a huge hop presence. It’s perfect for folks who want a nice IPA or for folks who are trying to get into IPAs but don’t want the bitter finish.

Thirsty Dog Citra Dog

Third we have another IPA. I’m not stuck in a rut with all of the IPAs but people (read: me) like drinking IPAs when it’s hot out. Thirsty Dog out of Akron, Ohio also makes an American IPA called Citra Dog. This is not a starter IPA. It’s hoppy. Really, really hoppy. Yes there’s a bitterness to it and yes you’ll taste it for a while after you finish with it but it’s crisp, refreshing, bold and quite citrusy, all elements l like in my IPAs.

Widmer Brothers Hefe Shandy

My fourth pick is from Widmer Brothers out of Portland, Oregon. It’s not an IPA for a change, you’re welcome. This one is a different spin on their famous American Hefeweizen. It’s their Hefe Shandy, so imangine their mildly hopped basic American Hefeweizen but with lemon character and also a nice dose of Lemon Drop hops. Lemon Drop hops are very new to the beer market and have a huge lemon citrusy hop flavor as the name would suggest. It’s good.

Elevator Bleeding Buckeye

Lastly I’m throwing in a local beer from Elevator called Bleeding Buckeye. Many of you have probably had this beer, an easy drinking Amber that gets to the heart of important Ohio priorities: Buckeyes and football. America!
