Land Grant Brewing 1862

As a drinker of craft beer (and lover of the “weird side” of craft beer), my tongue has been through a lot. And, while most of it has been delicious, I do also look for a zen-like balance in my drinking. Because of that, I cracked a gentle grin and slight nod of approval when I saw Land Grant’s 1862 Ale (an American-style Kolsch) in my fridge, just waiting for that perfect opportunity to grace my tongue. That time is now, you tasty bastard!

On the nose, 1862 is all about the grains. Caramel and a light toffee sweetness compliment toasted malts and a clean breadiness. The aroma is fleeting unless your nose is buried in your glass (which it should be). From the American hops, notes of pine and citrus arrive at the end of each breath, subdued but creating a touch of complexity that is not normally found in a kolsch, but works very well in creating a bright and refreshing aroma.

Even if you’ve never tasted the actual grains that go into beer, you’ll know what this beer is made of, because you can taste it all. Similar to a lager, the flavor is slightly sweet, with a crisp finish that quickly wanders off the tongue. Bread crust and toast create a gentle backbone, while notes of caramel and toffee create a subtle sweetness that washes over the tongue. Hints of pine and notes of citrus peel add some American brightness at the sides of the mouth. A touch of bitterness lingers at the back, before slipping away and starting over with the next drink.

If you’re looking for a beer that is easy to drink, easy on the tongue, but tasty as hell, this is it. The American hops keep it moderately complex and “fun”, but there’s no denying the traditional flavors that will fill your mouth with each taste. If you’ve been on a run of huge stouts or massive hop bombs, give this a try (your tongue will thank you).
