When Brew Brothers opened at the Scioto Downs Racino in late October, they were still waiting for permit approval, so it was late November before their house beer began to flow. Head brewer Ryan Torres and assistant brewer Beau Warren have now been brewing for about eight weeks, with some very good results.
First out of the fermenters were some “gateway” beers” to entice the local gamblers to explore craft beer. This includes Carano Extra Kolsch, a light, refreshing beer at 4.5%; and Redhead Amber Ale at 6.0% ABV. I suspected that their customer base might be largely a Bud Light sort of crowd, but not so.
“We get a good mix of craft beer drinkers here in addition to the light beer folks,” Ryan said.
A few weeks after debuting the gateway brews, Ryan and Beau’s newest offering just hit the taps this week. It’s an excellent Double IPA that goes by the moniker of Mouth Circus, brewed with the relatively new Lemon Drop hop varietal, along with some Mosaic. This is a sneaky strong beer that registers 11.0% on the ABV scale, but you would never know it. It has a tangy, refreshing taste that hides the high strength. Ryan added, ‘we always warn the customer up front about the ABV for this beer’.
For customers who want to enjoy a great brew without impairing their gambling skills, Brew Brothers offers a malty Scottish Ale at a very low 3.0% ABV. Or they can even opt for the in-house brewed Root Beer. Six house beers are always on tap along with a number of guest brews.
Brew Brothers is located at the north end of the Eldorado Scioto Downs Racino at 6000 South High Street, two miles south of I-270.
