This is a guest post by Lydia Johnson. Lydia likes wheat beers and malbecs and whiskey, primarily. I’ll try anything. Except hops. I hate hops. Blech.
The first time I ever experienced North Market’s Food and Ohio Wine Festival was back in 2006, when I was only 20. My parents were visiting me while I was in college and we ended up at the North Market. The sun was hot and my mom was thrilled to throw back a few. We meandered between booths and sniffed, sipped, spit and rinsed, learning about Ohio ice wines, the geographic placement of the vineyards, and that some were right here in Columbus. I, wristbandless, was stealing sips from my mom, my dad trailing behind, soaking in the crowd and the tannins. I discovered that Ohio cherry wines tasted sweet and divine and that this would be an event I would attend annually.
Fast forward to 2011, the 10th Ohio Food and Wine Festival is coming up next weekend, and I still have all my North Market wine tasting glasses from previous years in a cabinet. Festival-goers can expect cooking demonstrations, live music, crepes, and local vendors, in addition to the usual North Market fare available inside.
At just $5 for admission and a commemorative North Market mini-wineglass, and tastings priced between $.50 and $2, the festival is a fantastic way to celebrate local vineyards and wineries whilst day drinking outside. Wines will be available for purchase by the glass and bottle, as well.
