Tightly hugging the corner of Country Road and East Olentangy Street in Powell, Ohio, the restaurant of Local Roots offers entrees that support the local farming movement and three drink menus from two bodacious bars. A deep set studio lighting creates the perfect contemporary mood that trumps the word “Country” on the cross street sign. Initially, I set out to discover a favorite wine at Local Roots, but my taste-buds were knotted and tied by a bartender cheerful to greet and eager to educate. I was directed instead to a sleek and smooth Saison.
Not only pleasing the palate with organically grown food, Local Roots showcases a craft beer selection of eighty chilled bottles and twenty four taps, along with a wine list of velvet-bodied reds, whites of sweet and dry oak, and a cocktail list designed with a signature touch. For beer aficionados, Local Roots offers two “Flight” options: the “Ohio Flight,” which offers 2 oz. tastes of each Ohio Brewery on tap, and the “Mix-it-Up Flight,” which offers five 2 oz. tastes of any beer on the tap. And for those thirsty beer giants eager for a competition, Local Roots has just the challenge. Individuals who complete the task of trying every beer at the restaurant will get a personalized plaque nailed to “The Wall of Foam”, a personalized mug, a t-shirt, and discounted drinks for the rest of time. In addition to tasty drinks and the challenge, the bar also offers cigars of rich and smoky blends for patrons to enjoy.
Yet, the inside of Local Roots is just the first part to impress. A patio sheltered by large sun umbrellas creates the perfect setting for an early dinner out, or a relaxing drink after work. And if one outdoor setting isn’t enough– no problem. There’s another, just around the corner, that seals the deal on Local Roots’ hype: The Beer Garden.
Local Roots opened the gates to its Beer Garden on April 19. A pleasant corner-side patio that brings High Street to Powell’s backyard offers patrons live music events, a summertime menu of light tapas and spring-inspired salads, along with drinks from a newly built bar. For the next few opening weeks, bring your creativity running to Local Roots for the chance to name the newest addition. The winner with the best name will be thanked by the house staff and presented with a fifty dollar gift card.
