Just off of 3rd Street downtown at appropriately 122 E. Main Street is Sidebar 122, a relatively new (Nov ’11) Columbus bar and restaurant.
My drunk brunch quest brought my husband and I here on a Sunday around noon. We walked into a small and bright bar area and were seated back in the dining room, which offered a cozy atmosphere with an exposed brick wall, colorful abstract art and The Best of Johnny Cash as the soundtrack.
Our server was fun and friendly and walked us through the brunch specials, and invited us to come back on a Saturday night to check out the live jazz downstairs.
For the drunk part of my brunch I ordered the Airmail cocktail – it wasn’t specifically listed on the brunch menu, but it was one of their specialty cocktails that caught my eye when I was checking out the menu at home. Sparkling wine, rum, lime and honey syrup. It was VERY tart, but very delicious.
The hubs ordered La Paloma, “the Mexican thirst quencher” with tequilla as the star booze – tequila doesn’t come to my mind as a brunch liquid, but paired with fresca and grapefruit juice it was a really refreshing drink.
For the brunch part of my brunch, I went with the breakfast pizza of the day topped with smoked ham, cheddar, roasted potatoes, red pepper and two poached eggs on top. Our server billed it as the perfect hangover cure, and while I wasn’t hungover to test that, I bill it as the perfect breakfast pizza. I ended up taking half of it home because it was so much food but found myself sneaking bites in the car because it was THAT good.
My husband had the veggie omelette with artichokes, red peppers, onions, tomatoes, spinach, provolone and mozarella cheeses, served with roasted potatoes and wheat toast. As with my pizza, his serving size was enormous. After getting used to paying $10-20 for a good brunch entree at most places, it was a welcomed surprise to see the same dollar get WAY more food at Sidebar.
Sidebar 122 is located at 122 E. Main Street. Brunch is available Sundays from 11am-3pm.
