Pints and Poker: Hollywood Casino’s drink lineup

Like it or not, Columbus is getting a casino in less than two weeks. I happen to be in the “like it” camp – I lived in the Wheeling area before moving to Central Ohio, and when the casino opened there a few years ago it provided a lot of my friends with jobs, and now it gives me something to occupy an hour or two when I visit home. But at the casino in Wheeling, my best bet for satiating my thirst is an overpriced Miller Lite. Bleh.

I didn’t have high hopes for Columbus’ casino to fare much better (it’s almost impossible to find craft beer in Vegas, too – is there something about gambling and good beer that don’t mix?) but I was pleased to see that the standard BMC and import lineup will be joined by tap handles Bell’s Two Hearted, Great Lakes Burning River, Columbus Brewing IPA, Founders Porter, Strongbow Cider, Sam Adams Octoberfest and Rogue Dead Guy Ale. There’s nothing great in the beer bottle selection, and the cocktail list (below) isn’t particularly inspiring, equipped with kitschy names like “Double Down Martini” and “Lucky Lemon Drop”, but at least I know I can drink one of my favorite IPAs while I’m losing my car payment on the black jack tables.

Hollywood Casino Columbus opens October 8.

Martini menu:

  • Lucky Lemon Drop: Absolut Citron and Stolichnaya Razberi shaken with a splash of sour mix and sprite-served
  • Royal Flush: Crown Royal, Grand Marnier and Chambord liqueur shaken with cranberry juice
  • Chocolate Rapsberry Martini: Absolut Vanil, Chambord liqueur, Godiva Dark liqueur and Bailey’s Irish Cream
  • Heavenly Margarita: Patron Silver Tequila and strawberry liqueur shaken with lime juice and sour mix
  • Key Lime Martini: Vanilla Vodka, Rosa Lime, and a splash of Malibu
  • Carrot Cake Martini: Pinnacle Whipped Vodka, Frangelico, Cinnamon Schnapps
  • Double Down Martini: Grey Goose vodka, Godiva Dark Liqueur and Kahlua liqueur
  • Ten Grand Hand: Tanqueray 10 Gin and Lime juice
  • Cherry Apple Martini: Pinnacle Cherry Vodka, Apple Pucker Schnapps and a splash of lime juice
  • Mexican Madras: Jose Cuervo, orange juice and cranberry juice with a splash of lime juice

Craft beer in Vegas is certainly limited. If you look really hard, you can find some good beers now which gives me some hope. Try out the Venetian’s “Public House”. Lots of taps and bottles to choose from. Also, the Monte Carlo has “The Pub”, with dozens of taps. Off the strip is German style beers at the Hoffbrauhaus at Paradise and Harmon and then there is the “Crown and Anchor British Pub” on Tropicana which has some nice taps and some seating outside.
