I had been to Spagio a few times before my recent drunk brunch visit, but I had never made it off the spacious patio or past the decadent dessert case nestled just inside the door. It turns out Spagio has a huge dining room in the back. Who knew?
Spagio’s signature cocktail list offered a good selection of fruity and bubbly blends for brunch boozing. I ordered the Ruby Apple Fiz, with port, sparkling wine, cranberry juice and apple juice, garnished with an apple slice. It tasted like something I would hastily concoct at home upon taking inventory of my available ingredients, rather than something I would expect to buy from a bar, but it was decent nonetheless. My husband had the Pama Royale, with pomegranate liqueur, sparkling wine, Cointreau and fresh squeezed orange juice, which was a much tastier – and better assembled – drink.
As Spagio, the restaurant, is connected to Spagio, the wine store, you can buy any bottle from the shelves to enjoy with your meal for retail cost plus a nominal corkage fee.
Spagio’s brunch menu offers several selections, with many savory choices like corned beef hash or huevos rancheros, though the sweet-leaning crowd will enjoy the blueberry french toast or pillowy pancakes. I went with the quiche loraine, filled with gruyère cheese, bacon and onion and topped with yet more bacon and served with a small salad. It was delicious. My husband had the eggs a la maiason, poached eggs and black forest ham atop freshly baked brioche bread, topped with hollandaise sauce and served with home fries and a wedge of iceberg lettuce with creamy herb dressing.
Brunch at Spagio is served Saturdays from 11am-3pm and Sundays from 10:30am-3pm. Spagio is located at 1295 Grandview Ave.
