Drunk Brunch: Bel Lago [NOW CLOSED]

It took about half an hour to drive up to the Hoover Dam reservoir. No, not that Hoover Dam. The one in Westerville.

The vast expanse of water behind the little blue and white beachouse-esque building that is Bel Lago Waterfront Dining makes you feel like you’ve just arrived at a New England beachside cafe. The interior is just as charming, and the wall of windows facing the reservoir assures a waterfront view from just about anywhere in the dining room.

After we were seated and had glanced at the cocktail menu, I suspected it was leftover from fall; a pumpkin chai martini gave me the impression, another drink described as having “a fall twist” confirmed. I ordered the Italian Ice Martini with vodka, limoncello, cranberry and sparkling soda which was very light and refreshing. My husband had the Fig Sidecar with cognac, triple sec, brown sugar simple syrup, vanilla bean, cinnamon and clove. It tasted like everything I love about autumn, and I was perfectly OK with that in March.

Bel Lago’s brunch is only available in buffet, which includes a dozen or so warming containers filled with bacon and sausage, french toast and waffles, potato hash and biscuits and gravy, and a few non-breakfasty items like pasta and lobster mac and cheese (which our waiter described as “famous” and I thought was just “OK.) Several trays of cold fruit, cheese, bagels and desserts also line the tables. They also have an omelette station with a few fillings for you to choose from. At the urging of the very friendly chef, I tried some candied bacon while waiting for my omelette, which put regular bacon to SHAME.

All of the food was pretty good, and we both left overly stuffed, because who can resist a second or third plate at a buffet? ESPECIALLY when the buffet is $24.95 per person for adults. At almost $80 this wins (loses?) the distinction of being the most expensive drunk brunch to date. By a LOT. It was an enjoyable experience, but at that price point I can buy three or four people an even more delicious drunk brunch closer to downtown Columbus.

Brunch at Bel Lago is served Sundays from 11am-3pm. Bel Lago is located at 170 N Sunbury Road.
