A Southern kitchen at the end of the Short North district, Double Comfort sits with its chicken insignia jutting out beyond the building. The restaurant is reminiscent of home with modern wood finishing and a lazy atmosphere that makes you want to stick around – especially after you’ve had a full Southern meal.

The brunch cocktails are what you would expect: Mimosa, Bloody Mary. They do offer a bucket of Mimosas for a large party or an ambitious single. This includes a whole bottle of Prosecco and a carafe of orange juice to mix at your leisure. My mother had the Mimosa and I got a taste. It left something to be desired. A better balance of orange juice and champagne would have mixed bite and fruit in a more balanced way.

I had the one specialty drink, a Sweet Tea Sour. This drink combined Double Comfort’s house made sweet tea, simple syrup, egg white, Maker’s Mark whiskey, and lemon juice. The initial flavor was a strong whiskey, but followed by a back end of sweet tea and refreshing lemon. It was an interesting take on the classic whiskey sour and I enjoyed it. I would not recommend it if whiskey and sour are not your ideal flavors. Double Comfort offered a full bar to choose from as well that included some intriguing homemade infused vodkas.

If you are not taken with drinks, the food should bring you to a Double Comfort table. The brunch menu is extensive, but if you don’t taste their chicken or biscuits, you’ve made a mistake. Double Comfort offers some of the most amazing fried chicken I’ve had. The breaded skin is done to crispy perfection and offers a sensational taste of sweet and spice playing greatly with the juicy and tender chicken. The biscuits were just as amazing. Dense buttermilk with a crispy crust, cooked to perfection.

I had the Eggs and Ham, which was great breakfast food (potatoes, eggs cooked to order and thick, sweet ham) and my mother chose the Chicken N’ Waffles, a far better pick, but we split. They were topped with a rich, signature, glaze-like Three Sins Syrup (bourbon, bacon, maple and coffee). Anything you order will fill you with the Southern comfort you desire. You may end up needing to sit a while to digest it all.
