The Ohio State Fair Homebrew Competition celebrated its 20th year by judging 528 beers, meads and ciders brewed across the state from Ohio homebrewers and homebrewers from neighboring states who are active members of an Ohio homebrew club.
Judges evaluated each entry based upon five different criteria including aroma, appearance, flavor, mouthfeel and overall impression.
Matthew Shurtz of Dover, Ohio, took home the Best of Show award with his Robust Porter with toasted almond and coconut. New this year, a Runner-Up Best of Show award was presented to Dan George of Westerville, Ohio with his German Pilsner.
Medals were awarded to the top three finishers in each flight, with the fourth receiving a ribbon. Winners in 25 flights represent 12 Ohio counties including: Delaware, Fairfield, Franklin, Greene, Hancock, Lake, Mercer, Montgomery, Tuscarawas, Warren, Wayne and Williams.
