The Phoenix Brewing Company: Death and Draughts

phoenix-brewingHead north on I-71 and in less than an hour you can be at the Phoenix Brewing Company in downtown Mansfield, which has been open for a little over one year and is definitely worth the drive.

The brewery and taproom are located in the former Schroer Mortuary which dates back to 1914. Their 5bbl brewery is located in the basement, which was once the embalming area for the mortuary. The first floor taproom was originally the mortuary’s chapel. With this history and venue, Phoenix plays off the theme with beer series names like ‘Cemetery’ and ‘Mortuary’, and individual beers like John Doe American Wheat and Embalming Fluid Imperial IPA. Flights are served in a wooden coffin, made from the former coffin elevator track.

Besides the cool venue, Phoenix brewing is characterized by great community support and explosive growth. According to co-owner Scott Cardwell, when they first opened in the spring of 2014, they immediately sold all 50 memberships in their “Founders Club” which carried a hefty fee in exchange for some thank you gifts and perks. The same thing happened when they debuted their Mug Club. Clearly, the Mansfield community has literally bought into Phoenix Brewing. As a result, they have grown – and grown: Phoenix started with two fermenters, then quickly added two more, then another, and are now looking to add a sixth; their 5bbl brewhaus is being pushed to the limit and they’re considering upgrading to a 15bbl system; their seven taps swiftly became nine, and now stand at sixteen.

The current draft lineup at Phoenix includes nine house beers and seven guest beers, all from other Ohio breweries. Their Flagship beers, which are always on tap, include an IPA, ESB, Brown Ale, American Wheat, Pale Ale, and Oatmeal Milk Stout. Somehow, brewmaster Duncan Macfarlane manages to spring loose one or two of the fermenters to produce a wider range of additional beers which have included a Bohemian Lager, Irish Stout, Winter Warmer, Hefeweizen and Belgian Golden Ale. In addition to their beer selection, Phoenix has wine from Cypress Hill and spirits from OYO. Pizza and bar snacks are available in the taproom, and neighborhood restaurants are available for additional options. Music is a big part of their success, with live music on Friday and Saturday evenings. This weekend, the brewery is a stop on the Tap Room Takeover Comedy Tour at 7pm on Saturday, August 9.

Phoenix Brewing Company is open Thursday, Friday, Saturday and Sunday and is located at N. Diamond Street in Mansfield.
