Studio 35: where beer meets movies

studio 35 beer tastingStudio 35 Cinema and Drafthouse is the perfect place to pair craft beer with good — and sometimes bad (intentionally or not) — movies.

With 39 craft beers on tap and a 241 seat single screen theater, Studio 35 is something special. This 78-year-old theater underwent some very extensive renovations in 2012 under the ownership of the husband and wife team of Eric Brembeck and Rita Volpi. For beer lovers and cinemaphiles, two of the most important improvements were the new craft beer bar in the lobby and the addition of a state-of-the-art digital projection system.

And if you love a good beer and movie, then what about ten good craft beers and a movie? That’s what Studio 35 serves up once a month on select Sundays starting at 2pm. Attend one of their Sunday screenings and you’ll get to sample ten interesting beers interspersed with funny stuff, free stuff and beer/brewery talk and ending with a movie screening, all for 25 bucks.

The man that pulls all of this together is Andy Wuelfing, who also manages the beer lineup at Studio 35. Every month he pairs a brewery or beer style with a movie — and the movies tend to be decidedly non-serious (think Spaceballs, Major League, Monty Python). Andy coordinates the “free stuff” — door prize drawings for brewery gear or Studio 35 freebies — as well as the “funny stuff,” consisting of on-screen video shorts from the likes of funnyordie.com, buzzfeed.com, Key and Peele, and Comedy Central, plus there may be a few (sometimes off-color) jokes or stories, a little serious beer instruction about each beer sample, and maybe even some sort of costume contest. You just never know what’s next. And that’s the point according to Andy. As he puts it, “The industry sometimes forgets that beer tastings are supposed to be fun!”

If you’re up for whatever comes next, head to some of these upcoming events at Studio 35:

September 6: Starship Troopers, paired with Rhinegeist beers
October 11: Shaun of the Dead, paired with ‘Zombie’ themed beers
November 1: Goodfellas, paired with beers from Land-Grant and Hoof Hearted
December 6: A Christmas Story, paired with Christmas ales

January brings the return of the Dude-a-thon. This The Big Lewbowski event sold out last year in just 90 seconds. As a result, Andy is planning an extended Dude-a-thon weekend in 2016 to allow more people to attend this very funny event. Studio 35 also broadcasts OSU games, features regular ‘Bad Movie Nites’ and monthly showings of the Rocky Horror Picture Show. Check out Studio35.com for the current movie line-up, upcoming events and draft lists, and enjoy a buck off everything during their 4-6pm happy hour. Studio 35 is located at 3055 Indianola in Clintonville.
