The last time you bellied up to the bar, did you pause to look around your favorite establishment to wonder about its history? Columbus is a historic place for brewing, and as such has ample stories tied to some of its oldest watering holes. Columbus Landmarks Foundation is offering an opportunity to discover Columbus’ drinking history through their Historic Tavern Tours.
The tours feature three “mystery” locations: a traditional neighborhood bar that has been quietly in existence for over 50 years, an up-and-coming tavern with a somewhat shady past and historic tie to Columbus as a “foodie” town, and a new bar & restaurant residing in an 1890s tavern.
Tours will include historic gossip, architectural knowledge of the taverns, dazzling details through storytelling, and the opportunity to embrace each location’s unique environment. While drinks are not included in the price of the tour, each establishment will have something to quench your thirst.
The next available tour dates are August 30, September 6 & September 20 – July 19 and August 16 dates have already sold out. Tickets are $25 for Columbus Landmarks members and $30 for non-members and are available online.
The tours begin at 6pm and meet at the northeast corner of Mound and High under overhang of the Subway/Marriages Done Here businesses. A shuttle bus will transport the group to each watering hole and return to the starting point at the end of the tour which allows you to drink up while you drink in the local history. Parking is available at several nearby public lots and garages as well as on-street parking.

I’ve done a couple of the tavern tours and some of the Landmarks walking tours. They are always really interesting and fun. You can choose what/how much you drink on the tavern tour as the drinks are not included. People usually socialize among their own groups so it’s good to go with some friends.
I am looking forward to going on one!
