National Mead Day was organized in 2002 in an effort to increase mead awareness and bring mead makers together. Columbus has embraced the mead community over the years as Brothers Drake continues to create quality mead using locally sourced ingredients. Brothers Drake is inviting Columbus to celebrate on August 1 with a special National Mead Day flight, live music, tours and more.
Four limited release meads-Lemon Drop, Hibiscus, Cuvee and PB&J-will be available starting at 11am this Saturday. The PB&J is back after selling out in an hour and half during National Mead Day in 2014, said bar manager Amy Mesh. A mix of concord grape and roasted peanuts, the unique flavor was in high demand after last year’s party.
The other three flavors are brand new. Lemon Drop is the first ever bubbly mead released by Brothers Drake. The Cuvee is a mix of blueberry, blackberry, raspberry and cherry that was aged for two years in an OYO bourbon barrel. Bottles are expected to sell out quickly, so those hoping to take some home are advised to come early in the day.
Brothers Drake is open until 2am and plans to celebrate all day with free waffles and coffee from Cafe Brioso and Taste of Belgium, production tours, a mead making demo and live music including a bellydance performance.
“This is our fifth National Mead Day and every year it gets more popular and more busy,” said Mesh. “People have really come to understand our quality and commitment to staying local.”
Brothers Drake will be open 11am-2am on Saturday. Find additional details for this event on Facebook.
